History
The Xoloitzcuintle is no stranger to our ancestral past, they have been venerated and represented throughout our history for more than 3,000 years, making them one of the oldest breeds in the Americas. Their remains have been found throughout Mesoamerica's archaeological sites.
Named after Xolotl, God of fire and lighting, (twin brother to Quetzalcoatl), and Itzcuintli Nahuatl for dog. They were venerated as they were connected with corn cultivation, and rain; making them part of many religious ceremonies. They made deep connections with their owners, as they were part of their daily life. And so, it is understood they have been found in burial sites, as they were thought to be a guide through Mictlan, a belief shared through ancestral societies such as Maya, Toltec and Mexica. The belive consists of taking their owners across the Apanohuaia river, this kick starts thier four year, nine level journey of the underworld. Until they present themselves to the Gods of death, Mictlantecuhtli and Mictecacihuatl, so their souls could finally achieve eternal rest.
It was not until 1956, (as they were close to extinction), that they were recognized in Mexico. To know their story is to understand our resilience. In part, having them in my home strengthens my connection to our ancestral roots. I can honestly say that they are the best furless companions we could ever ask for!
