The history of the Xoloitzcuintle is closely related to our ancestral past (pre-hispanic era). To our ancestors they were more than just an Itzcuintli (dog) they were part of their families, ceremonies and eternal rest in the after life.

This wonderful breed nearly went extinct. By the early 19th century, this breed could only be found in remote mountain villages. However, their numbers have since increased within the last century. People such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera were so inspired by them, that they themselves owned and bred the Xoloitzcuntle, in hopes of contributing to the increase of their population. 

 

We ourselves are on a similar mission hoping to bring awareness and a healthy increase to this ancestral breed. While owning them, we have noticed that not many people have seen or heard of this magnificent creature.

 

Over the last few years of ownership, we have grown to really connect and love Frida & Xico. Our two children adore them and see them as members of our family. We have vigorously prepared for the arrival of our first kennel and are excited to introduce a product of love, awareness and care. Xolotl Kennel is an ode to the God of fire and lighting, who according to ancient beliefs is the creator of the Xoloitzcuntle.
